Understanding Fragrance Families and Strength

Choosing a fragrance that suits the season and the occasion is a subtle art, but it need not be complicated. The first step is to understand the main fragrance families and how their character shifts with the weather. Most scents fall into broad groups, each with its own personality and ideal moment.

  • Citrus and aromatic: bergamot, lemon, neroli, lavender, rosemary. Fresh, uplifting and best for daytime.
  • Floral: rose, jasmine, geranium, orange blossom. Can be light or rich, depending on the blend.
  • Woody: cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli. Grounding and masculine, good year-round.
  • Oriental or amber: vanilla, tonka bean, incense, resins. Warm, sensual and best for cooler weather and evenings.
  • Fougère and chypre: lavender, oakmoss, bergamot, patchouli. Classic, sophisticated and versatile.

Strength matters as much as scent. An eau de cologne (3–5% oil) is light and fleeting, perfect for a quick refresh. Eau de toilette (5–15%) is the everyday workhorse. Eau de parfum (15–20%) offers depth and longevity, whilst parfum (20–30%) is the richest and most intense. In hot weather, choose a lower concentration; in cold, you can afford something more robust.

Spring: Freshness with a Hint of Green

As the weather warms and the days lengthen, your fragrance should feel clean, lively and slightly verdant. Think of a walk through a damp garden after rain. Look for notes of bergamot, neroli, green tea, violet leaf, vetiver and light woods such as cedar. A touch of mint or basil adds a pleasant crispness without tipping into winter warmth.

An eau de toilette is usually sufficient. If you prefer more staying power, a light eau de parfum with a citrus-woody base works well. Apply to pulse points after moisturising, and avoid rubbing the wrists together—this bruises the top notes and shortens the scent’s life.

Spring is ideal for daytime meetings, lunches and casual weekends. A fresh fougère or a citrus-aromatic scent feels appropriate and never overpowering.

Summer: Citrus, Aquatics and Light Woods

Heat amplifies fragrance, so what smells subtle in April can become oppressive in July. Reach for bright, effervescent notes: lemon, lime, grapefruit, sea salt, cucumber, mint and light musk. Aquatic accords and airy florals such as neroli or orange blossom also work beautifully. Avoid heavy amber, oud and tobacco—they can turn cloying in the sun.

An eau de cologne or eau de toilette is your best ally. Keep a travel atomiser in your bag for a midday refresh, and apply to cooler areas such as the chest and the back of the neck. If you are heading to a wedding or a garden party, a light eau de parfum with a citrus-woody base gives you a little more presence without overwhelming.

For the office in summer, choose something with low projection. Your colleagues will thank you.

Autumn: Warmth and Spice

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, your scent can become richer and more textured. This is the season for cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, tobacco leaf, leather, amber and sandalwood. A chypre or a woody oriental feels right—elegant, grounded and slightly contemplative.

An eau de parfum is ideal. It holds its shape in cooler temperatures and leaves a sophisticated trail without shouting. Apply to the wrists, neck and perhaps a spritz on the chest. If you are going straight from the office to dinner, a warm spicy-woody scent transitions effortlessly.

Autumn is also a wonderful time to experiment with layering: a light citrus cologne over a woody base can create something uniquely yours.

Winter: Rich, Resinous and Comforting

Cold weather dulls our sense of smell and dries the skin, so fragrance fades faster. This is the moment for the most indulgent notes: oud, incense, vanilla, tonka bean, dark chocolate, patchouli and resinous woods. A parfum or a dense eau de parfum will wrap you in warmth and last through the evening.

Apply sparingly—two or three sprays are plenty. Moisturise first, as hydrated skin holds scent better. For festive occasions, a leather-and-spice composition feels both traditional and dashing. For everyday winter wear, a softer amber or a smoky vetiver keeps things comfortable rather than overpowering.

Evening events in winter call for something with depth. A single spray on the collar of your coat can leave a memorable impression without filling the room.

Occasion Matters: Day, Office, Evening and Special Events

The same fragrance can behave differently depending on where you wear it. Use this as a practical guide:

  • Office: Choose a low-projection eau de toilette with citrus, light woods or a clean fougère. Apply one or two sprays to the chest, not the neck, so you only smell it when you move.
  • Daytime casual: Fresh aromatic or aquatic scents work well. They feel relaxed and approachable.
  • Evening: This is your chance for amber, leather, tobacco or oud. An eau de parfum gives you presence without being aggressive. Apply to pulse points and enjoy the sillage.
  • Special events: Weddings, black tie and celebrations call for a signature scent—something you love and that feels unmistakably you. A rich floral-woody or a spicy oriental is rarely out of place.

Finally, consider your personality. If you are understated, a subtle vetiver or a soft citrus may suit you better than a loud amber. If you enjoy making an entrance, a bold oriental or a leather chypre will do the job. Always test on your own skin, never on paper alone, and give a fragrance twenty minutes to settle before you decide. With a little thought, your scent will become as natural a part of your style as a well-cut jacket or a polished pair of shoes.
